Welcome back to Survive and Thrive. I’m Nathan Hurd, Chief Growth Officer with The Oxford Club. And today, I want to talk about something that we all have and we all create, which is our legacy.

Now, as investors, we often think of our legacy first and foremost as our financial legacy. You know, what are the resources… what money and assets are we leaving – and to whom?

This is, of course, a very important question.

We also all know – whether it’s in our own family experience or people in our lives or the infamous stories – of cases where money has been passed down and has caused rifts in relationships and broken down, you know, families and the connections within those families.

What can help to prevent this from happening? Well, the first question is, what are your intentions for your financial legacy? If you’re intending to pass on financial resources, what do you imagine it will help to create, or help to do?

And do the people that you intend to be recipients – whether this is a long way away or not, and I hope it is – do they know what your intentions are, and is there consensus around those intentions? Are they supportive of your intentions, and do they agree amongst themselves if there’s more than one recipient?

So that’s the first question. And I would say, if you haven’t had that conversation, I invite you to have it. Invite the people you have in mind over the next time they’re in town, or set up a dinner and talk them through what your hopes are. Begin to have that conversation, and start to create a consensus and an agreement – because that’s going to make a major, major difference when the time comes.

The second part is that, as an Oxford Club Member, you understand better than anyone the value of not just money but the ability to understand how to grow and take care of money – how to invest it and invest it wisely.

And to the extent that this is not an understanding that your descendants or the recipients of your financial legacy have, start thinking about ways that you could pass that along too. I mean, you know, it doesn’t have to be overly complicated. If you’re a passionate investor or trader and you’re really interested in it, it doesn’t take all of that to be careful and wise with the resources that you pass along.

Maybe there are some simple portfolio structures you can pass along. Maybe there are some basic concepts you can start to instill.

But this part of it, of course, will make a very large difference as well.

The third part – and probably the most important part that I wanted to get across today – is that our legacy, as we all know, goes so much deeper than money.

In fact, for any funeral you’ve ever been to, you know that money is not a topic that comes up. Status is not a topic that comes up. Even business success or, you know, this or that, is not often something that comes up.

What does come up are relationships, the connections that individuals have with one another.

And so I would just invite you to think about how, you know, we live in crazy times. At the time I’m filming this video, the economy is fairly uncertain, and it’s just been a pretty wild past few years.

But there have been plenty of crazy times throughout history, and one of the things we’re waking up every day and doing is deciding what the circumstances in the world mean and how they’re going to affect our behavior and the interactions we have with the people in our lives.

And so I would just invite you to consider that you have a chance, you have an opportunity, if you choose, to find a meaning that’s empowering. You can find something that gives you hope about the future and let it be your guiding force. And at the very least, as we get older, we can show people how to live lives that are happy and grateful and peaceful.

What greater gift can we give to people who observe us from a distance… or who look up to us… or who are learning from us one way or the other. And I promise you, there are plenty of people in your life who do, even if it doesn’t feel that way – people who are watching how you respond to the circumstances of your life as they change.

And so consider that. I just invite you to consider that as you go through today and every day that follows, that you are building a legacy. We all are. We’re building a legacy through the actions, the behaviors, the meaning that we assign every day. And that influence is going to stand the test of time a lot more – and a lot further – than financial resources will, although those are wonderful too.

I hope this has been helpful, and I’d love to hear what your thoughts are – what have you planned, what have you done or not done, and how you think about the legacy you’re building every day, through your actions and so forth.

Until next time, thank you so much. This has been Survive and Thrive.
