Welcome to Survive and Thrive. I’m Nathan Hurd, Chief Growth Officer with The Oxford Club.

So this past weekend, my wife and I visited some friends for a gathering at their home in Connecticut. It was a beautiful weekend on a really special property in the woods, surrounded by water, two beautiful rivers… It was like a fairy tale. And we enjoyed some great connection with some amazing people.

But while we were away, my parents and my wife’s parents each took a turn watching our kids.

So on Sunday, my in-laws were watching them at our home when my mother-in-law fell down and hit her head in our guest room, and she couldn’t get up. This was late at night. And she’s had both her knees replaced, and she was just stuck. My father-in-law, who was with her, is older, and he couldn’t help her.

So after a while, with no other options, they called my father, who was at his house about 20 minutes away. He came right over. He, too, tried to help her up, but after several attempts was unsuccessful.

They ended up calling the ambulance, and the volunteer firefighters were dispatched and quickly arrived. Several of them – and a bed sheet, as I understand – were able to get her up. They used it as a gurney. She’s no worse for wear other than a bump on her head, thankfully.

While all this was happening, we were 5 1/2 hours away, with very poor cell service, and they tried to reach out to us. In fact, it wasn’t until the next morning that we got the messages from my parents and hers, trying to reach us and let us know what was happening.

Now, when we saw these messages, we felt terrible. We felt guilty. But then my wife and I sat down and talked. And we realized something.

The entire event that unfolded was enveloped in love.

When we talked to my mother-in-law, she was embarrassed. But she told us she had been crying the night before – not because of pain, but because she was afraid we wouldn’t let her watch our kids again. She loves them so much. And she came to watch them out of pure love.

My father came over right away when they called, at 11 at night, out of love and support for her and for us.

The volunteer firefighters arrived and treated everyone with dignity, with kindness, and – her especially – with love.

The truth is, had we not gone away, this enormous expression of love would have never come to pass.

And that’s the message I have for you today.

I believe that we, we humans, desire love more than anything else. And most of us spend our lives trying to find our way toward love – for ourselves and with other people.

So I invite you to look for it. Really look for it. Look for the frame of any situation that shows you the way love is motivating even the most painful events in life. It’s often there when you’d least expect it. And seek and you shall find. Doing so will let you tap into the greatest force we possess.

And I promise you the more love you invite into your life, the richer your life will become.

And until next time, I hope you consider this. This has been Survive and Thrive.
