Welcome to Survive and Thrive. I’m Nathan Hurd, Chief Growth Officer here at The Oxford Club. And today I’d like to discuss something you probably experience every week, if not every single day.

You know, there are some days when we wake up and we feel great. We have energy, clarity… we can see the good things in our life easily, and we can connect with most, if not each, moment.

And then there are some days when we just don’t. Maybe we didn’t get enough sleep or we’re just in a funk or something we perceive as bad happened recently. Or, you know, we don’t really know why, but we just wake up and we feel off.

We all experience higher and lower moods, stronger or weaker levels of energy. But today I want to put a finer point on something that tends to happen if we’re not careful. It can drag us down further. It can rob us of time. It can result in decisions that we regret or cause us to suboptimize our well-being and potential success in any given moment.

And that is this: letting one bad moment feed another… and then another. Thinking because you woke up tired or down that you’re going to be that way all day. Thinking that because you made one bad decision, one bad financial choice or one unhealthy choice, that it defines your whole day, week, month or even year. And not remembering – and believing – that every single moment is a chance to turn it around and begin again. And we can all begin again at any moment of the day.

You know, last Thursday, I had a day like this. I woke up feeling down – low energy, tired, irritable, sort of bummed out.

I’m sure a host of things contributed. I didn’t get to exercise when my alarm went off. There were pressures weighing on me… various pressures… and I hadn’t slept very well.

As I sat down at the breakfast table, I was feeling way off. But as much as I didn’t want my day to continue that way, in the moment, it felt inevitable.

And it’s those moments that matter most. When you feel incapable of change, force yourself into action.

So that day, I made one simple choice. I decided to get up and jump on the exercise bike for a short workout – even though it was outside of my routine and I wouldn’t have the time for my normal workout – and then take a cold shower. There are many benefits to cold water, including stress and depression reduction… boost in blood flow and oxygenation of the blood… and it wakes you up.

But that was it. Those two things. Nothing complicated. And it didn’t happen all at once, but I felt better and better as the morning went on. By noon, I was feeling much better, and the afternoon was one of the most productive I can remember. My energy was strong, and it ended up being a wonderful day – especially given where I started.

You know, it’s amazing how quickly the body and mind can change when given the proper attention. We really can turn things around in any moment.

So don’t feel like just because you woke up on the wrong side of the bed, as they say, that that has to define your day. Energy states are like waves. They come and they go, and you can influence them if you hold on to the belief that it’s in your hands to change it.

There are many simple things we can do to change the direction of our day and stabilize and improve our energy, like moving and breathing. You know, just getting out there and walking or otherwise getting your breath up. Hydrate. Drink a big glass of water and wait a few minutes and see how you feel. Eating a healthy meal. Taking a cold shower. Picking up the phone and calling someone and engaging in conversation. Or just pick up some paper and journal for a few minutes and get your thoughts out of your head and on paper.

None of these are rocket science. In fact, they’re very simple, and most of them cost nothing. But it’s in those moments… when you feel like your day can’t change… force yourself to take one or two actions and see what happens.

Let me know if you have other ways you course-correct or improve your mood throughout the day. Click the button below and email me. I’d love to hear from you. And until next time, this has been Survive and Thrive. Thank you.
